Vaginal Discharge

This may be:

  • Physiological – normal
  • Result from infection
  • Result from vaginal atrophy, which can occur during the menopause transition

Most women have some vaginal discharge (normal)

Abnormal vaginal discharge may have a specific colour or smell. It may be associated with irritation. A change in discharge does not mean that you have a sexually transmitted infection, but these are easily excluded by swabs (for chlamydia and gonorrhoea) and also blood tests (for syphilis and HIV).
